Using the procedure of Example 1, 50 mls. of methanol, 5.0 gram of triphenylphosphine and 1.0 gram of ruthenium trichloride hydrate are stirred and heated to form tris(triphenylphosphine) ruthenium dichloride as a brown insoluble powder which is recovered by filtration. 1.0 Gram of this powder is dissolved in a mixture containing 50 mls. of tertiary butanol and 1.4 grams of sodium acetate trihydrate. The resulting mixture is heated with stirring at reflux temperature under N2 for 4.5 hours to form an orange powder (0.44 gram) which is identified as the desired bis(acetato)bis(triphenylphosphine) ruthenium.
