Procedure

A solution of 100 g (0.42 mole) of 2a in 300 mL of methanol was hydrogenated under standard conditions with 5 g of Raney nickel (ca. 10 hours). Filtration, distillation of the solvent, and fractionation yielded 94 g (94%) of 3a, b0.7 92°-95° C.
