Procedure

Proceeding in a manner similar to that described in part A of Example 2, 14.3 g (0.05 mole) of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, 16.0 g (0.07 mole) of 76 percent active 1-n-butyl-2-methylindole and 13.3 g (0.10 mole) of aluminum chloride were interacted in 100 ml of benzene. The reaction mixture was drowned in 200 ml of five percent hydrochloric acid with stirring. The solid which formed was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to obtain 2-[(1-n-butyl-2-methyl-3-indolyl)carbonyl]-3,4,5,6-tetrachlorobenzoic acid (Formula VIII: R°=R1 =R2 =R3 =Y1 =H; R5 =CH3 ; R6 =(CH2)3CH3), a pale yellow solid melting at 162°-164° C. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum was in accord with the structure.
