To 1.31 g of 1-(2,3-dihydro-benzo[1,4]dioxin-2-ylmethoxy)-naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester in 95 ml of THF were added 5.62 ml of 2 M aqueous sodium hydroxide and 30 ml of methanol. After 1 h at reflux and 16 h at room temperature the organic solvents were removed in vacuo. The residue was treated with 2 M hydrochloric acid, and three times extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulphate, and concentrated and dried in vacuo to yield 0.94 g of 1-(2,3-dihydro-benzo[1,4]dioxin-2-ylmethoxy)-naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid.
