Procedure

To a solution of 2-(2-chloro-5-nitro-phenyl)-malonic acid diethyl ester (2.3 g, 7.28 mmol) in EtOH (20 ml) and water (20 ml) was added Fe powder (2.0 g, 36.4 mmol) and ammonium chloride (2.0 g, 37.8 mmol). The mixture was heated at 100° C. for two hours. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was partitioned between water and dichloromethane, and the organic layer was separated, washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. Purification of the crude product by flash chromatography (hexanes:EtOAc 8:2) gave 1.35 g (65%) of 2-(5-amino-2-chloro-phenyl)-malonic acid diethyl ester as a yellow solid.
