PROCEDURE

A suspension of 1-(methylsulphonyl)piperazine (3 g, 18.3 mmol), 3-bromopropan-1-ol (3.3 g, 23.8 mmol) and potassium carbonate (3.28 g, 23.8 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) was stirred at 70° C. for 4 hours. After cooling, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with increasingly polar mixtures of methanol and methylene chloride to give 3-(4-methylsulphonylpiperazin-1-yl)propan-1-ol (2.93 g, 72%).
