Procedure
A mixture of 0.6 g of 4-(7-ethoxycarbonylmethyl-6-oxo-6,7-dihydro-1H-purin-2-yl)-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester, 4 in 20 mL of POCl3 was heated to 80° C. for 4 h. The excess POCl3 was removed by concentration in vacuo. The residue was poured into ice water. The pH was adjusted by 5N NaOH. The solution was extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase was concentrated in vacuo to afford 5.
