A solution of 5-fluoro-2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl-benzoic acid methyl ester (1 g, 3.74 mmol) and 1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.53 g, 4.12 mmol) in 10 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 2 ml of DMSO is heated to reflux for 90 hours. The solution is allowed to 5 cool to room temperature and evaporated. The residue is crystallized from dichloromethane and hexane to give 1.12 g (3 mmol, 80%) of 1-(5-methoxycarbonyl-4-nitro-2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl) -1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester, m.p. 136 -138° C., ES-MS: m/z 374 [M+H]+.
