Procedure
16.6 g of 2,2,4-tris(methylthio)butanoic acid (4) (73.3 mmol) were dissolved in a mixture of 140 ml of H2O and 35 ml of acetone. Subsequently, a solution of 6.2 g of calcium acetate (93%) and 22 ml of H2O was slowly added dropwise at 20° C. with vigorous stirring. After a short time a white solid precipitated out which was filtered off after 30 minutes. The resulting white solid was washed twice with 200 ml of H2O each time, then with 200 ml of acetone and 200 ml of diethyl ether, and dried in a drying cabinet. A total of 17.7 g of calcium 2,2,4-tris(methylthio)butanoate (5) (M=490.8 g/mol, yield=98%) were isolated.
