Procedure
3-(aminomethyl)-N,N-dimethylaniline (1.2 eq) was dissolved in the minimum amount of anhydrous CH2Cl2 under Ar, followed by the addition of tert-butyl (S)-1-((S)-oxiran-2-yl)-2-phenylethylcarbamate (1 eq) with stirring. Anhydrous CH2Cl2 was added dropwise until all of the epoxide had dissolved. The reaction was heated to 50° C. After heating overnight all of the solvent was gone leaving a solid in the flask. Purification via flash chromatography yielded tert-butyl (2S,3R)-4-(3-(dimethylamino)benzylamino)-3-hydroxy-1-phenylbutan-2-ylcarbamate.
