Procedure
4-Benzyloxy-3-chlorobenzoic acid hydrazide (27.6 g., 0.1 mole) is suspended in 500 ml. 1N hydrochloric acid and the mixture cooled to about 0° C. A solution of sodium nitrite (7.0 g.) in 40 ml. water is added at such a rate as to keep the temperature below 5° C. The mixture is stirred at 5° C for 3/4 hr., filtered and the precipitate dried in vacuo to give 27.8 g., (96.8% yield) 4-benzyloxy-3-chlorobenzoyl azide.
