Procedure
To a mixture of ethyl 3-aminopropionate hydrochloride (10.29 gm, 0.067 mol), 4-(2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)-1,2-dinitrobenzene (5.96 gm, 0.016 mol) and 150 ml of dry dioxane there was added 9.12 gm (0.066 mol) of anhydrous potassium carbonate. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for about 48 hours. The resultant bright-yellow suspension was poured into water and extracted with ether. The etheral solution was then washed with saturated sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Filtration and evaporation of the filtrate gave an orange oil which, when mixed with methanol yielded orange crystals which were isolated by filtration and dried to give the desired product.
