A solution of (2S,4R)-1-t-butoxycarbonyl-2-[(E and Z)-5-carboxy-1-pentenyl]-4-(4-chlorophenylsulfonylamino)pyrrolidine (7.63 g) in 75% aqueous trifluoroacetic acid (48 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 40 minutes and the solvent was evaporated in vacuo. To the residue was added toluene (50 ml) and the solvent was evaporated in vacuo to give (2S,4R)-2-[(E and Z)-5-carboxy-1-pentenyl]-4-(4-chlorophenylsulfonylamino)pyrrolidine trifluoroacetate (7.85 g) as a brown oil.
