Procedure
A suspension of 10.0 g of 3',4'-dimethyl[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carbonitrile, 3.45 g of sodium azide and 2.8 g of ammonium chloride in 300 mL of DMF was heated to a bath temperature of 125° C. for 20 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled, filtered, and evaporated and the residue was taken up in ethyl acetate and washed with water. The residue obtained after drying and evaporation was crystallized from ethyl acetate-dichloromethane to give 4.6 g of 5-(3',4'-Dimethyl[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1H-tetrazole, mp 192°-194° C. The analytical sample melted 193°-194° C.
