Procedure
The crude product is purified by column chromatography to give ethyl 4-(2-(4-(2-(7-chloroquinolin-2-yl)ethenyl)phenoxymethyl)phenoxy)-4-carbethoxybutyrate. The ester is treated with 1N NaOH solution (30 mL) in dioxane overnight. The reaction mixture is then acidified, and purified by flash chromatography which gives 4-(2-(4-(2-(7-chloroquinolin-2-yl)ethenyl)phenoxymethyl)phenoxy)-4-carboxybutyric acid.
