A mixture of 5-benzyloxy-4-methoxy-2-(5-methyl-[1,2,4]oxadiazol-3-yl)benzoic acid (reference example 5-1) (817 mg), thionyl chloride (0.53 mL), N,N-dimethylformamide (1 drop) and toluene (10 mL) was stirred at 80° C. for 30 minutes. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. Toluene was added to the residue, and the mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 5-benzyloxy-4-methoxy-2-(5-methyl-[1,2,4]oxadiazol-3-yl)benzoyl chloride.
