A mixture of 2-(4-fluoro-phenoxy)-6-methyl-benzoic acid (21.6 mmol, 5.32 g), dimethylsulfate (43.2 mmol, 4.2 mL), K2CO3 (43.2 mmol, 6 g), and diethyl ketone (80 mL) was refluxed with stirring for 18 h before it was concentrated in vacuo. To the residue was added water (50 mL) and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (1×100 mL). The organic phase was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a tan oil (5.5 g); 1H NMR (CDCl3, 200 MHz): δ=7.20 (t, 1H), 6.92 to 7.04 (m, 5H), 6.66 (d, 1H), 3.84 (s, 3H), 2.35 (s, 3H).
