Procedure
Trifluoroacetic acid (2.5 ml) was added to a solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl 1-(2-chloro-3-pyridinyl)-3-methyl-2-oxo-4-imidazolidinecarboxylate (579 mg, 1.857 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 ml) and the solution was stirred at room temperature for 36 hours. The solvent was evaporated under vacuum azeotroping with toluene and the residue dried under heated vacuum overnight 1-(2-chloro-3-pyridinyl)-3-methyl-2-oxo-4-imidazolidinecarboxylic acid (537 mg, 70.4% yield) which was used crude in the next step. LC/MS MH+=256.
