Under the conditions of example 5A, 1 g of 4-(2-iodophenoxy)-butyric acid ethyl ester in 10 ml of methanol and 10 ml of 1 n sodium hydroxide solution is saponified, worked up, and 900 mg of 4-(2-iodophenoxy)-butyric acid methyl ester with a melting point of 66.5°-67° C. is obtained.
