To a stirred solution of 3-bromothiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (1.9 g, 10 mMol) in ethanol (15 mL) is added thiophenol (2.2 g, 20 mMol) and powdered potassium carbonate (3.04 g, 22 mMol). The mixture is stirred overnight and concentrated. The residue is partitioned between water and ether. The aqueous layer is washed with ether and the organics combined, dried(MgSO4) and concentrated. Purification by flash column (SiO2, eluted with 3% ethylacetate/hexanes) afforded the desired aldehyde (2.02 g, 92%) as a yellow liquid.
