Procedure
A mixture of 10 mL of formic acid and 25 uL of H2SO4 containing 0.25 the 5-nitro-2-(3-carbethoxypropyl)benzoisothiazol-3-one was heated in a 130° oil bath overnight. The reaction was cooled and then poured into 30 mL of water. After standing overnight, the mixture was filtered to yield 0.11 g of the title compound as a yellow solid, mp 183°-186° C.
