Procedure
A mixture of the thiourea (4.67 g), ethyl formylchloroacetate (Archiv der Pharmazie, 1953, 286, 494; 2.55 g) and dimethylformamide (25 ml) was stirred and heated to 100° C. for 1 hours. The mixture was cooled, filtered and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was partitioned between methylene chloride and a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic solution was dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and evaporated. The residue was purified by trituration in ethyl acetate to give ethyl 2-[N-(3,4-dihydro-2-methyl-4-oxoquinazolin-6-ylmethyl)-N-ethylamino]thiazole-5-carboxylate (1.37 g), m.p. 188°-192° C.
