Procedure
To 100 ml. of carbon tetrachloride saturated with chlorine at 0° C. to 5° C. were added 5 grams (27 mmoles) of potassium phthalimide. The resulting yellow-green suspension was allowed to warm to room temperature and then was stirred for 60-90 minutes. The solvent then was removed in vacuo, and about 100 ml. of water were added to the resulting white solid. The mixture was filtered, and the collected solid was washed with water and vacuum dried to obtain 4.6 grams (94% yield) of N-chlorophthalimide.
