Nα -Benzyloxycarbonyl-D-tryptophyl-L-leucine methyl ester, 2.75 g., and 2.65 ml. of 2.23 N hydrogen chloride are dissolved in 100 ml. of methanol followed by the addition of 300 mg. of 10% palladium-on-carbon. The reaction is stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere with hydrogen bubbling through the mixture for seventy minutes. Thin layer chromatography indicates the reaction to be complete in about 20 minutes. The mixture is filtered and the solvent evaporated. The residue is dried under reduced pressure, 2.21 g. of D-tryptophyl-L-leucine methyl ester hydrochloride, [α]D23 -73° (c 1.02, methanol).
