Procedure
4-(2′-Methoxybenzylidene)-2-methyl-4H-oxazol-5-one (5 g) was dissolved in ethanol (100 ml) and an aqueous ethylamine solution (15 ml) and potassium carbonate (7 g) were added thereto. The mixture was heated at 80° C. for 5 hr. After cooling, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the precipitated yellow crystals were collected by filtration to give the title compound (1.2 g).
