N-benzyl-3-hydroxy-2-phenylpyridinium bromide (20 g, 58.3 mmol), acrylonitrile (50 ml, 755 mmol) and triethylamine (20 ml, 143 mmol) were mixed and stirred at reflux for 20 hours in 1,4-dioxane (150 ml). The mixture was partitioned between saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with 25, 35 and 45% diethyl ether/iso-hexanes to yield the title compound (4.4 g, 24%).
