Procedure
4-(4-Fluoro-phenyl)-1,3-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (700 mg) was dissolved in a mixture of 20 mL methanol and 6 mL 10% aqueous NaOH and heated at 45° for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and acidified with conc. HCl. The resulting precipitate and collected by filtration and air-dried to give 4-(4-Fluoro-phenyl)-1-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid.
