Procedure

cis-2,6-Dimethylmorpholine (2.0 g) was dissolved in acetonitrile (70 ml). Ethyl bromoacetate (2.5 ml) and potassium carbonate (3.1 g) were added and the mixture was heated with stirring at 60° C. for 12 hours. The solvent was evaporated and then ethyl acetate was added to the residue. The organic layer was washed with brine and then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (developed with ethyl acetate-hexane) to give the title compound (2.9 g) as a colorless oil.
