Procedure
To a solution of (E)-1-(5-bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(pyridin-4-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (20 g, 63.3 mmol) in EtOH (160 mL) and H2O (480 mL) was added NaOH (2.53 g, 63.3 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight. The mixture was filtered to give a solid residue. The solid residue was dissolved in EtOAc. The resulting solution was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give 6-bromo-2-(pyridin-4-yl)chroman-4-one (10 g, 50%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): 3.00 (t, 2H), 5.51 (dd, 1H), 7.02 (d, 1H), 7.39 (d, 2H), 7.63 (t, 1H), 8.04 (s, 1H), 8.72 (d, 2H).
