Procedure
To a solution of 2-(2-bromophenyl)acetic acid (2 g, 9.3 mmol) in anhydrous methanol (20 mL) was added 4-methylbenzenesulfonic acid hydrate (1.767 g, 9.3 mmol). The mixture was heated to reflux for 3 hr. The solvent was removed in vacuum. Ethyl ether and water was added. The organic phase was washed with water and brine, then dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give methyl 2-(2-bromophenyl)acetate (2 g, 80%), which was used for next step without purification.
