To a solution of 5-chloro-3-ethoxycarbonylamino-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.6 g, 11.6 mmol) in ethanol (50 mL) was added hydrazine hydrate (6.2 mL, 127 mmol). After heating at reflux for 4 h, the title compound was collected by filtration (2.9 g) and was used in the next step without further purification.
