To a solution of tert-butyl{1-[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]cyclobutyl}carbamate (7-3, 6.65 g, 19.14 mmol) in anhydrous acetone (38.3 ml) was added KMnO4 (12.10 g, 77 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 35° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and EtOAc and water were added to the mixture. The suspension was filtered through a glass frit and the filtrate was extracted into EtOAc, washing with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and reduced in vacuo to give 7-4 as a brown oil.
