Procedure

To 6-bromo-2-naphthol (8.43 g) in 80 ml DMF at room temperature was added sodium carbonate (8.0 g) portionwise, and after the addition was complete, the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes, and then a solution of 3-fluoro-4-nitropyridine-N-oxide (6.0 g) in 40 ml DMF was added dropwise. The reaction mixture was then stirred for six hours at room temperature. The mixture was then poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with sat. NaCl solution and dried over Na2SO4. The filtrate was concentrated to yield a solid (31 g). This material was triturated with methanol to yield a solid, 10.0 g, m.p. 175°-177° C.
