Procedure
To a cooled solution of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-3-benzazepine of Example 1 (6.5 g, 0.021 mole) and triethylamine (2.5 g, 0.025 mole) in chloroform (75 ml) was slowly dropped propionyl chloride (2.3 g. 0.025 mole) in chloroform (10 ml). After stirring at ambient temperature two hours the reaction mixture was concentrated to an oil which was dissolved in ether then washed with water, dilute HCl, again twice with water and dried (saturated NaCl, anhydrous MgSO4). The solution was filtered then concentrated to a solid (7.2 g, 95%, m.p. 98°-105° C.). A sample was twice recrystallized from hexanes to yield 3-propionyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-3-benzazepine, m.p. 109°-110° C.
