81 parts by weight of 3-butyryloxy-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-(4-methoxycarbonylbutyl)-cyclohex-2-en-1-one and 8 parts by weight of 4-dimethylaminopyridine were dissolved in anhydrous dichloromethane, and the solution was stirred for 48 hours at room temperature. The solution was washed with 10 wt % strength hydrochloric acid and water, and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to give 2-butyryl-3-hydroxy-4-methoxycarbonyl-5-(4-methoxycarbonylbutyl)-cyclohex-2-en-1-one as an oil (compound no. 4).
