Procedure
2.2 gms of ethyl 6-ethyl-1-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxonicotinate is suspended in 35 ml of 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The resulting suspension is heated on a steambath for 4 hours, cooled and acidified with dilute HCl to yield 2.0 gms of 6-ethyl-1-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxonicotinic acid. mp (CH3CN)=244°-5°.
