Procedure

Sodium (155.5 mmoles) was added slowly to methanol (200 ml) under an atmosphere of argon. The mixture was cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (78 mmoles) was added dropwise. This mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and the compound of Example 9 (a) (7.8 mmoles) was added dropwise. The reaction mixture was stirred for 24 hours. The solvent was evaporated. The residue was taken up in ice water and acidifed with 10% phosphoric acid to a pH of 6.5. The product was extracted into ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The resultinq residue was flash chromatographed with 1.0% methanol and 1.0% formic acid in methylene chloride. This provided the product as an oil.
