Procedure
Into a suspension of D-ribose (50 g, 0.33 mol) in acetone (1500 mL) was added sulfuric acid (1 mL) dropwise. Reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and then neutralized with sat. aq. NaHCO3. Solution was decanted and concentrated. Oily residue was dissolved in EtOAc (1000 mL) and washed with water (300 mL). Aqueous layer was re-extracted with EtOAc (2×500 mL). Combined extracts were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to yield the target compound (42.3 g, 67.3%) as oil which was used as such for the next step.
