To a solution of 4′-(2-benzylbenzofuran-3-yl)biphenyl-4-carbaldehyde (5.0 g, 12.9 mmol) in ethanol (100 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (25 mL) was added sodium borohydride (980 mg, 25.8 mmol) as a solid in 3 portions. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour (TLC control) and then poured into water (100 mL) and extracted with diethyl ether (3×100 mL). The combined extract was washed with water, brine, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a white solid (5.02 g, 99%).
