CAN Oxidation: A flask was charged with 1-hexyl-2,5-dimethoxy-3,4,6-trimethyl-benzene (203; 1.75 g, 7.5 mmol) and CAN (20 mL) then cooled to 0° C. A solution of CAN (8.4 g, 15.4 mmol) in water (10 mL) was added to the flask. After 1 h the reaction was complete. The reaction mixture was extracted with MTBE (3×20 mL). The combined MTBE layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated by rotary evaporation to yield 2-hexyl-3,5,6-trimethyl-[1,4]benzoquinone (205) as a yellow-orange oil which solidified upon standing (1.64 g, 88%). 1H NMR (400 MHz; CDCl3; ppm) 2.49-2.46 (m, 2H), 2.04 (s, 3H), 2.03 (s, 6H), 1.44-1.22 (m, 8H), 0.90 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3H).
