Placed potassium ethoxide (1.0 eq.) in a sealed tube with EtOH and shook until dissolved. A mixture of diethyl oxalate (1.0 eq.) and propionitrile (1.0 eq.) was added to the sealed tube and the mixture was capped and stirred at reflux. After a time sufficient for reaction completion, the reaction was cooled and the precipitate collected and washed with diethyl ether to afford 47.
