Iron powder (0.416 g, 7.43 mmol) is added in small portions to 7-fluoro-1-(2-fluoro-ethyl)-5-nitro-1,3-dihydro-indol-2-one (Step 3, 0.45 g, 1.86 mmol) and ammonium chloride (0.987 g, 18.6 mmol) in ethanol (40 ml) and water (20 ml) at 90° C. The reaction mixture is stirred vigorously and heated for 30 min, cooled to room temperature, and diluted with dichloromethane (100 ml). The mixture is filtered through celite, the organic layer separated and washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to give the title compound as a dark brown solid. HPLC r.t. 2.34 min; MS for C10H10F2N2O m/z 213.2 (M+H)+.
