Procedure

A solution of 29.0 g of the product from Example 1 and 24 ml triethylamine in 290 ml of dichloromethane was cooled to 0° C. and treated with 13 ml acetic anhydride. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 22 hours. Dichloromethane (200 ml) was added and the organic layer washed with three 50 ml portions of water and one portion of brine. Drying the organic layer over magnesium sulfate followed by concentrating in vacuo gave the crude product. Purification by silica gel chromatography (elution with hexanes-ethyl acetate, 70:30) affoded 19.5 g of pure 2-[2-(acetyloxy)ethyl]-N-(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzenesulfonamide as a colorless oil.
