A solution of 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxypropyl)-1,8-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one (5 g.) in Eaton's Reagent (10% P2O5 in methanesulfonic acid; 100 ml.), under an atmosphere of nitrogen, was heated at 70° C. for 2 hr. The mixture was cooled and poured into water. The pH was adjusted to 7 with NaHCO3. The product was filtered off, washed with water, dried in air, and recrystallized from isopropanol/charcoal to yield the product, m.p. 218-220.5° C.
