A mixture of N2-benzyl-N2-methyl-4-(4-morpholinylmethyl)-1,2-benzenediamine (3.1 g, 10 mmol) and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate (4.2 g, 20 mmol) is heated at 120° C. until HPLC shows that the reaction is complete (20 min). The product is applied in 10% ethyl acetate/hexane to a silica gel column which is eluted with 20% ethyl acetate/hexane to remove excess diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate and then with 50% ethyl acetate/hexane to elute 3.7 g of the title compound as an oil.
