Procedure

1.10 g of 1,4-diacetoxy-2-t-butyl-6-isopropylbenzene was dissolved in 22 ml of methanol, 2.5 ml of 3N hydrochloric acid was added, and the solution was heated under reflux for 2.5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, methanol was distilled off on a rotary evaporator. The concentrate was combined with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated. The concentrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography (in n-hexane containing 5%-10% ethyl acetate) to give 0.66 g of 4-acetoxy-3-t-butyl-5-isopropylphenol as a pale yellow solid (yield 70%).
