A mixture of 1-fluoro-4-hydroxycarbazole (470 mg, 2 mmol), potassium carbonate (345 mg, 2.5 mmol), (2R)-(−)-glycidyl 3-nitrobenzenesulfonate, (518 mg, 2 mmol), and 20 mL of acetone was heated to reflux for about 18 hours. The reaction was cooled and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified via flash silica gel chromatography eluting with 10% ethyl acetate/hexanes to give 247 mg of the title compound. Yield: 48%. H NMR. MS(FD).
