Pd(dppf)Cl2 (2.5 g, 3.3 mmol) was added to a degassed, ambient temperature solution of 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-[4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)phenyl]ethanone (20 g, 67 mmol), 2-bromo-5-fluoropyridine (11.6 g, 67 mmol) and sodium carbonate (12.7 g, 134 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (4400 mL) and water (90 mL). After heating at 90° C. overnight, the reaction mixture was poured into ice (400 g) and extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic extracts were dried (magnesium sulfate), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Chromatography over silica eluting with petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (20:1) afforded the title compound.
