Phenethylhydrazine hydrochloride and 2.0 g. methyl pyruvate are dissolved in 20 ml. methanol and left to stand at ambient temperature for 30 minutes, followed by cooling to 0° C., whereafter 30 ml. water are added thereto. 2.8 g. (61% of theory) methyl 2-(phenethylhydrazono)-propionate crystallizes out; m.p. 59°-60° C. (decomp.).
