Procedure

7-[α-Methylthio(2-furyl)acetamido]-3-acetoxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (341 mg), 128 mg of 2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole and 68 mg of sodium bicarbonate were dissolved in 10 ml of a 0.1M phosphate buffer (pH 6.4), and the solution was stirred at 60° C. for 7 hours, and then at room temperature for 14 hours. Then, 10 ml of water was added, and the mixture was washed with diethyl ether. The aqueous layer was acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid to a pH of 2, and extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. Petroleum ether was added to the residue, and it was powderized. By filtration, the final product was obtained.
